1&1 Partners with Open-Xchange, but are They Competing with Microsoft or Google?

Mon, 26 Feb 2007 22:14:00 -0400

BusinessWeek reports that 1&1 will soon start deploying Open-Xchange mailboxes in Germany, followed by rollouts in the US, Britain and France. The article reports that 1&1 manages 5 million email accounts on behalf of 2.7 million web hosting customers. (This is wildly inconsistent with the 6 million hosting customers and 65 million emails accounts in 1&1's Business 2.0 ad. Maybe these figures include users from 1&1 parent company United Internet's Web.de and GMX portals business?)

With Open-Xchange's open source solution, 1&1 will be able to offer Microsoft Exchange-like features for $5 per user per month, versus its $10-$15 $6.99 current price. BusinessWeek says this is "nothing but bad news" for Microsoft, but are Microsoft and Open-Xchange competing with each other? Or should both be worried that end users like Steve Rubel are turning Gmail into their personal nerve centers?

Steve is a senior VP at Edelman PR, an enormous organization that no doubt has an industrial strength email system, but Steve is hooked on Gmail because:

"Everyday I come across something on the web that I want to save for future reference... since I travel a lot, I need to access my bits from a mobile device. The latest version of the Google Toolbar has a send to Gmail function. Select some text or graphics, right click on it and send it to Gmail... Whammo - an instant personal database."

A friend who works at Microsoft says he can use his Windows Mobile phone to search his Exchange archive as well. But 10 GB Gmail accounts are available for $4.17 each per month (mobile client, website builder and web-based word processor and spreadsheet included). That's a 10x larger personal database compared with 1&1's 1GB allocation (Outlook 2003 and free domain name included).

Another important question is, to what extent will 1&1 be able to drive Open-Xchange adoption? Yes, as the world's largest hosting provider, 1&1 can deliver an enormous audience. But seeing is *not* deploying. As a point of reference, when I switched from (POP mail + Outlook + Blackberry) to (Google Apps + Gmail mobile) last week, I realized that despite the conveniently-located Google Start Page icon on my control panel, I still like Netvibes better. But thanks to the Gmail and Google Calendar widgets on Netvibes, I was able to piece together a best of all worlds solution.

If I were 1&1 CEO Andreas Gauger, I would think along the same lines and open up my community and technology platform.
Customer A might prefer Gmail + 1&1's website builder, while Customer B might choose Open-Xchange mail + Google Pages. Why not use widgets, RSS and open APIs to help each user concoct his perfect combination?

Mysql Server Optimization for DBA

Mon, 02 Jul 2007 12:45:16 -0400
MySQL is the most widely used multi-user, multi-threading SQL database
management system. To optimize MySQL performance, a DBA should have
reasonable knowledge of MySQL system variables. This
article covers the basics of MySQL server optimization. We will first
discuss MySQL optimization during installation. Then
we will discuss the seven most important and common system variables.
Plus, a brief note on how to optimize the server using those seven
variables.

We will also discuss MySQL status variables. This article would be very
useful for a newbie MySQL DBA when setting up a MySQL server.

Weekend Projects - Google Maps

Sat, 10 May 2008 23:51:20 +0000
Last week we focused on securing folders and using various methods to do that. This week we will focus on adding our business and website to Google Maps. Google Maps has a way to search for local businesses in your area. The idea is similar to a yellow pages online making it easier to find businesses in ...]

Mr. Giles continued, ”We know we are practically giving away hosting at this point. But we really wanted to do something that made people have to take a step back and say, ‘woah!’ We feel like this plan will do just that.”

The End of a Year - December 2007 Hosting M&A

Fri, 04 Jan 2008 23:55:00 -0400

Some M&A info from the NCC files for December 2007 - Not all inclusive but interesting...

Madrid, Spain - Private equity firms The Carlyle Group and Mercapital acquired Spanish Web hosting and domain registrar Arsys (arsys.net) for about $230 million. 550,000 domains registered, 170,000 customers and 250 employees.

San Francisco, CA - Digital Realty Trust acquired two European data centers; Cressex 1 in London, England 51,000 sq/ft and Naritaweg 52 in Amsterdam, Netherlands - 63,000 sq/ft.

San Mateo, CA - Garnett & Helfrich Capital purchased MTI Europe in a court-supervised auction. MTI offers the managed services, data storage, protection and collocation services.

Montreal, Canada - HostingDiscussion.com acquired and merged with HostingRefuge.com and TalkWebHosts.com

Macomb, IL - McDonough Telephone Cooperative (MDTC) acquiring Infobahn Outfitters a web hosting and web design company.

Suwanee, GA — Quality Technology Services, a provider of data center and managed services, acquired the customer base of First National Technology Solutions in Kansas City. QualityTech will boost its annual revenues over $100 million with the deal.

Lancashire UK - Red Fox Hosting acquired AGUK Hosting, managed and exchange hosting services

Herndon, VA - SWsoft acquired WebHost Automation Ltd. (Bristol, U.K.) maker of the Helm control panel and billing software for Windows - 1.5 million worldwide end users.

London, UK - UK-2 Group, Ltd acquired Dan Ushman’s Chicago based midPhase Services Inc.’s shared and VPS businesses. Dan keeps his fingers in the pie as he works his way up the food chain - why? UK-2 will collocate the acquired assets at SingleHop, Inc, a company owned and operated by Zak Boca and Dan Ushman. (High 5 on that one!)

My favorite acquisition of the month:
Chatswood NSW Australia - Broadcast Australia entered into an agreement to acquire Hostworks Group Limited a full service dedicated/managed colo company in a $68.9 million transaction. Each firm’s competencies complement each other – actually/really – synergistic - Check out the links to see what I mean. This is a great marriage – also the deal is a 37% premium to the latest closing price of Hostworks shares.

The UK and its past and related domains were busy in December.

Not an uncommon sight on the Redmond campus, a forest of cranes on the skyline.

If you are looking for forum hosting and forum web hosting plan, you had come to the right place. When selecting a forum hosting plan, its important to consider the following criteria:

One of the many disadvantages of Web design templates is that they almost all suffer from overusing graphics. The graphics are often large file sizes that suck up bandwidth and increase loading time. Worse yet, pretty butterflies, skyscrapers, or forests on the periphery of

your site, detract from the focus of your content. Graphics should be more than pretty objects adorning your site’s space.

HostGator vs 1&1

Another of our host vs. host series. This time it's HostGator vs. 1&1 Internet.

Producing such informative sentences on web hosting provider reviews was not an overnight achievement. Lots of hard work and sweat was also put in it.

Everything about low price web hosting

Today's low price web hosting Article

Truth be told, you might have to suffer through a few web hosting lemons before you find the web host that is best able to deliver you the best blogging experience. It never hurts though to have a check list like the one above before you start shopping so you know what it is you should be getting.

Make Money From Posting on Forums

Wed, 12 Dec 2007 20:22:25 +0000

Calling ALL Webbies in U.K., Austria, India, Switzerland, Germany. This is one of those times when you can get in on a great deal. One.com is making a hard push to rise to heavy-weight status in the web hosting arena by offering free web hosting, including a custom .com or country domain.

For anyone sitting on the sidelines waiting to jump in - I say, Go for it now.

They haven’t said how long the promo is good, but whoever gets in the door, is in.

Who is One.com? They’ve been around for almost a year and a half. They look very well funded and spent a nice chunk of change to buy the One.com domain from a company called Blue Circle Hosting back in mid-2006.

I asked around the web hosting community and no one’s heard anything negative about their of service or reliability.

No guarantee that they’re perfect, but at least the price is right to test them out.

The only thing I highly recommend is making sure you have the ability to control your domain name. Should anything not go your way, you’ll at least be able to hang on to your domain and take your hosting business to another provider.

Twitter is Misbehaving and I Blame Joyent! (Or, Hosting Providers as Venture Capitalists)

Wed, 14 Mar 2007 20:25:00 -0400

Dave Young from Joyent recently blogged about Twitter's use of Joyent Accelerators. Accelerators are Solaris Containers on Sun Fire X4100s with Sun Fire X4500s (also known as "Thumpers") for storage. Joyent promises on-demand, no-leash computing and offers virtual servers for as little as $45/month (includes 256 MB RAM, 5 GB storage, 15 GB bandwidth). It sounds pretty cool - and check out the video of Dave and Jason on Sun's website!

The problem is, after reading Dave's post, I think of him every time Twitter is down. Which, as many of his readers pointed out, happens often. Dave says us complainers are missing the point. Twitter is growing like crazy! It serves 4,000+ requests per second! That's a lot - and Joyent helped get them there! Unfortunately (or fortunately?), Twitter users' demand seems to exceed its already-substantial capacity.

If I were Dave, I'd move Twitter to as many XXL Accelerator Sparcs as it takes. Having come a long way just doesn't make good enough PR fodder when you've got John Edwards live blogging from the campaign trail ("About to make remarks at the Int'l Assoc. of Firefighters. Then remarks at the Boilermakers conference.").

A few months ago, I was telling Steve Kahan over at The Planet that he ought to turn a couple of his sales reps into venture capitalists, of sorts. These folks would scan the customer database for major brand names as well as up and coming influencers. They'd proactively monitor these VIPs' infrastructure and offer free scalability advice and migration assistance. They'd set up an invitation-only beta program and strong arm Dell into providing test units of its latest gear. They'd research these customers' industries and make introductions if they come across people in similar markets...

More recently, RedMonk analyst James Governor suggested something much more radical. Forget that beta program; how about long-term loans for future movers and shakers? And instead of my idea of creating case studies out of The Planet's great working relationships with today's news-makers, take a great leap forward to the open source hardware business model. Put your tools in the hands of tomorrow's innovators. You need to do this quickly, because you're competing with Jeff Barr. In Joyent's case, I have no doubt that last part is true...

PS - It just occurred to me that SoftLayer, in particular, might have much to gain from being a patron to soon-to-be influencers. Softlayer announced a private meet me room a few weeks ago, where developers of different SoftLayer-hosted applications can interconnect without incurring bandwidth charges. So if someone's created a community that many others are eager to extend and/or leverage, wouldn't it be worthwhile for SoftLayer to make itself that community's home base?

PPS - Hosted Solutions, too! It's cool that they're spearheading the Carolina SaaS User Group, but I think what would really enhance their appeal is if they hosted the most-mash-upped apps.

Online Services Okay with Partners

Tue, 11 Mar 2008 00:00:00 EST
March 11, 2008 -- ( <http://www.thewhir.com> WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Last week, Microsoft announced that it had begun the beta program for its Online Services offering, a version of Exchange and SharePoint hosted by Microsoft and delivered as a service.

Many web sites do not even have any tool in place to track their traffic. And yet there should be no excuse for this because there are many excellent free tools available online that will give you plenty of information on your visitors, including where they are coming from, what keywords they are using in search engines to find you and how long they are spending on which page on your site amongst a host of other very useful information you should have.
